Vocational Program

A plethora of research shows that youth who spend their teen years in out-of-home care such as group homes have a particularly difficult time transitioning to a safe, healthy adult life.  Indeed, a Boston Foundation study emphasizes, that among other things, organizations serving such teens must offer programming that focuses on employability.

Plummer Home’s vocational program helps residents with a wide range of skills from basic job application and interview skills to finding a job in the community.  One lesson we have learned through this program is that many of our boys simply are not ready for a community-based job.  For that reason, we have designed Plummer Home-based projects to teach particular skills as well as general skills such as timeliness, accountability and appropriate workplace behavior.  Among the projects in the past year have been 3 catering events and the building of a large shed.  In the coming year, we hope to use similar project-based education to winterize our garage into a year-round woodworking space and perhaps build out a room in our attic for use as a classroom or therapy space as deemed most useful.
